Richard Vickrey Madden was born in 1912 to the Colonel and Mrs. C.M. Madden. Madden was an accomplished oboist and violinist from an early age, placing first in State Competitions for violin in 1928 and second place in National Competitions for oboe in the same year. Born in 1912, Madden served as band director for the Evanston and Haven High Schools between 1937 and 1942, and became director of bands at Syracuse University.
